Yayoi Kusama

Limitations

Repetition – Yayoi Kusama creates work limits herself using specific forms, colours and structures in her work shown in her frequent use of dots and repetitive shapes. This obsession with repetition is reflective of her struggle with hallucinations and OCD.

Minimal Use of Colour – Her work often features a limited colour palette. This feature directs the focus of the viewer to the spacial distortion and feeling of endlessness that the room offers. This trademark is shown in her collection of pieces named the Infinity Rooms.

Structural Restrictions – Similarly, in the Infinity Room Kusama uses perception through reflective surfaces to create outward forms of infinite appearance from an arguably limited space.

Randomness

Placement of Dots Kusama’s work includes placement of seemingly randomly placed dots however their positions are often part of repetitive, organically designed pattern which mimics irregular patterns found especially in nature.

Langton’s Ant

http://www.langtonant.com/

-A two-dimensional Turing Machine with a simple set of rules but complex emergent behaviour – it can also be described as a Cellular Automation

Rules

-Squares on a lattice begin either coloured black or white. One square is identified as the ‘ant’ and can travel in any of the four directions at each step it takes

-At a white square the ant will turn 90° clockwise, flip the colour of the square and move forward one unit

-At a black square it will turn 90° counter-clockwise, flip the colour of the square and move forward one unit

Limitations in p5.js

^ In this code we were asked to create pieces made entirely out of circles, rectangles and triangles. We had to make an ice cream cone to begin with and then attempt a self portrait/ depiction. When only given three shapes to use in order to represent more complex appearances you have to think more deeply about varying combinations, arrangements and modifications to attempt to make something recognisable. With fewer shapes you are forced to create something more abstract, and rely on colour and configuration to convey meaning and imagery. This means that you will likely end up with a more abstract and imaginative piece.
